Bugs by type › Spiders and scorpions
Spiders and scorpions Spiders and scorpions are not insects. They have eight legs, not six, and no wings or antennae. Every spider can make silk, though not all of them build webs. Scorpions have pincers in front and a sting at the tip of the tail.
How to tell
What makes a spider or scorpion
01 Eight legs Four pairs of legs, and usually eight eyes.
02 Silk All spiders make silk: for webs, for wrapping eggs, or as a safety line.
03 Venom All are hunters. Spiders inject venom with their fangs and scorpions with their tails. Very few are any danger to people.
