These are some of the oldest kinds of flying insect. All of them grow up under water, sometimes for years, and then climb out to spend a short adult life in the air. Their wings cannot fold flat over the back.

Wings

The young live in ponds and rivers, and breathe through gills.

Eyes

Dragonflies and damselflies have huge eyes and hunt by sight. Mayflies do not feed at all.
