Bugs by type
The same 92 bugs, sorted by what kind of animal they are and not by where they live. Not everything we call a bug is an insect: an insect has six legs and a body in three parts. Spiders, woodlice, snails and worms are something else.
Nine kinds of bug
Beetles
Hard wing cases that meet in a straight line down the back.
18 to meet
Butterflies and moths
Four wings covered in tiny scales, and a tongue that coils up.
21 to meet
Bees, wasps and ants
A narrow waist, and often a sting. Many live in big families.
13 to meet
Dragonflies, damselflies and mayflies
Long bodies, glassy wings, and a childhood spent under water.
6 to meet
Flies and true bugs
Flies have just two wings. True bugs drink through a beak.
6 to meet
Grasshoppers, crickets, mantises and stick insects
Long back legs for jumping, or long front legs for grabbing.
8 to meet

Eight legs and no wings. Not insects at all.
11 to meet
