Good to know

Six things about the grey heron

Patience

Standing still

A heron can stand without moving for a very long time, then strike faster than you can see.

Flying

Neck tucked in

Herons fly with their neck folded back in an S and their long legs trailing behind.

Nests

Treetop colonies

Herons nest together in big stick nests at the tops of tall trees. A colony is called a heronry.

Early

First to nest

Herons are among the first birds to nest each year, and may be sitting on eggs in February.

Food

Not just fish

As well as fish they eat frogs, voles, ducklings and even moles.

Wings

Big wings

A heron's wings measure nearly two metres from tip to tip.

Out and about

How to spot one

Look along the edge of any river, lake or garden pond for a tall grey bird standing perfectly still. In flight, look for slow wingbeats and trailing legs.

Lend a hand

How to help

Herons do well alongside people. Clean water full of fish and frogs is all they need.
